I had no idea what I was getting into when I started You. The title is so apt and appropriate. It’s a whole television show that takes place in second person – he’s addressing us the entire time. I’m not familiar if a show has been narrated like that before? It makes us sympathize with Joe – which let’s be honest, we wouldn’t be if we were watching the show objectively through a third party lens.

We get his view on not only how he see’s the world, but we also get a view of how people view him. It’s again because of that genius second person narrative. The first season was an introduction to the the crazy that is not only Joe, but also Beck. The second season we are more familiarized with his tendencies, basically we watch as he hones in on his craft.

When I first started You, I’m not to sure why I expected this to be a common cw tv drama type of television show. Probably had to do something with my being a big Gossip Girl fan. I guess technically Joe does has some similarities to Dan. Only difference being that one is absolutely deranged and obsessed.

The makers did such a good job in pulling us in. The detail in which he studies his new mark is fascinating. He tries to go about things the right way, but he’s always overpowered by his obsessive tendencies. Relatable to an extent isn’t it? A lot of us do think like him, the only difference is we don’t act like him. We may picture a whole ass wedding whenever someone likes our pictures, but Joe takes it to the next level – he will marry them… And then probably kill them.

Now of course Beck had her fair share of flaws. She saw Joe’s red flag, but she chose to ignore them until the very last big one blew up in her face. Same thing with Love. Joe had numerous red flags, but these girls were already damaged that Joe seemed like he was too good to be true. Which we as an audience get to see first hand, he really is the perfect gentlemen to the world, but to us he’s flawed and for some reason we still can’t hate him?

It’s a very well written and well executed show, and the makers chose an excellent cast to perform their vision. Penn Badley was great all around, but one of my favourite surprise actresses was definitely Shay Mitchell in Season 1. Peach was a delight, she was not as flawed as Joe but for some reason the audience as a whole disliked her more.

Shay played a very subdued, meek character on Pretty Little Liars. And on this show she was this bombshell rich bitch. Kind of got to see a different side to Shay’s acting.

Every season you think the last season was going to be the peak of the show, but they keep up with the quality of the show. They keep us guessing, and they showing us new facets of Joe. We get to see where his obsessive tendencies started, and the limits at which he’s able to go.

You is a show that will keep churning out season after season if they maintain the quality. It’s dark but it’s also intriguing, it has the perfect balance. The genius was when they decided to do everything in second person and made us all captivated to watch. Joe relating to us is almost disgusting, but at the same time it makes sense.

I was definitely late to the game in starting it, but if you haven’t seen it yet I highly recommend a watch.
