Prabal Gurung is one of those stories that make it seem that dreams can come true. A Nepal based fashion enthusiast turned a New York designer. He is now creating clothing for all the big celebrities in Hollywood and Bollywood.
He is well known for his draping and pleating and initially was famous for his elegant designs. The direction in which his brand has gone is an interesting thought. He has definitely branched out from his initial portrayal of elegance, clean lines. My favourite part about the brand is definitely the dainty feminism it brings to the fashion industry. The blend of Asian and Western influences create these couture with business casual.

I would describe Prabal Gurung as a brand that’s for anyone that wants to look like a ‘Boss Lady Bitch’. Clean lines, extremely well fitted, and a touch of sexiness that would take any women’s confidence to the peaks. His feminine suits are to die for, and his high slitted gown that flow with any movement are all sorts of aphrodisiacs.
All genders, all generations, all sizes – there is something for everyone. There’s bling, there’s conservative, there’s revealing. One thing that you’ll be promised is a strategically placed slit.

Since his initial debut I’m not to sure what happened. He may have gotten caught up with trends and started throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks. Prints, fabrics, metallic accents, way too many cuts, odd layering and combinations. It’s turned into to too much. It may look good on runways but in reality things aren’t as wearable.
The elegance and the flowing drapery is a thing of the past. Yes silhouettes and the fitting of clothing is always on point, but his ‘avant-garde’ collections have no become repetitive and his primary focus.

Now if Prabal Gurung went back to his original designs, they held the experimentation he so craves now – just at a smaller scale. Look at the initial draping and creative detail. It’s never over the top and extremely beautiful. His feminine suits were the talk of the town. Add some feathers to a gown? He still made it look elegant. Sexy meets dainty feminism. Now things are a little too garish.
I know this post may seem like I dislike Prabal Gurung, but thats not true. I love love love the older Prabal Gurung designs. And if theyre available today I will be purchasing once (again when the nonexistent waterfall of money blesses my life). I look at one of this evening gowns and immediately know it will not only be flattering, but confidence will be climaxing.
I just wish he didn’t think he had to conform to trends. Sometimes classic, traditional designs are the most appreciated when done justly.
And in that sense, man does Prabal Gurung serve justice.
