Jane the Virgin is such a likeable show, the whole premise is nothing that happens is realistic. It’s almost a fantasy world but at the same time descriptive to make a palpable illustration. It’s such a cute chick flic in the form of television.
We know we’re in for a crazy ride immediately in the first episode.
Now there’s the usual that people rave about: Jane and Rafael, Jane and Michael, how hot Rafael is.
Honestly my all time favourite part of the show was definitely Petra.
I know lots of people say that Petra grows on you as time passes, and she becomes a lot of peoples favorite’s. I was the opposite, I was a fan since Season 1. She has always been one of my favorites.
So when Petra says ‘I changed for you’ to JR when she’s breaking up with her, I was a bit thrown off to say the least. Petra gave wayyyy too much credit to JR.The Petra that was pregnant and made a kids hotel for her daughters was not the same Petra that turkey basted herself. She grew up all by herself.
I’m going to say something wicked controversial now: I thought JR was a toxic relationship. I get it Petra’s life is dramatic to say the least, but the way she craved JR’s approval and was always so terrified of her running away. Nah man. I wasn’t for any of that. Petra deserved someone that fought for her, someone who she could be 100% with without the fear of them running away.
JR knew from the beginning when Petra was accused of murder that this was never going to be a normal relationship.
She did it on her own, she grew up because she wanted to and at times had to. Not because someone did it for her.
My favourite part was Petra having a horrible toxic family, so she sought out a different version of life for her daughters. She made her own family. Jane and Rafael and the relationship they built with Petra was one of the most beautiful aspects of the show.

Jane as a separate character was wonderful, she was this girl in a crazy world just trying to find her way. And then she gets pregnant. Damn now I want to restart the show. She was neurotic and controlling and everything thrown her way is something she has zero say in. It’s definitely not fair but she made it work.
Now Jane in relationships is a different beast. I get for someone like her to be in a relationship is insanely difficult, but she tried. A lot of the times yes it did blow up in her face.
Before I go further I would like to clarify that yes I am team Rafael.
Why?
Yes he’s flailing and a wealthy brat. But that’s why I loved Jane and him together. They both grew together and possibly because of each other. He turned into a stellar human and she chilled out. The show not only showed a beautiful relationship between the two, but also the obstacles they faced with raising Mateo together. I’m kind of glad they didn’t get the happily ever after until the very end of the show.

Jane’s family is honestly what makes the show. They are melodramatic and hilarious. But they also represent the ethnic families out there. The crazy strict mother, the rebellious child, and the grandchild trying to find peace between the two. I don’t think the show would’ve been the same had Jane moved out, or maybe it would? The show runners have a way to them that make everything work.
Xiomara was amazing. She along with Petra had some of the best character growths. She learned from her mistakes and changed accordingly. She may have had a rocky relationship with Jane at times but she did everything in her power to try to understand her. I guess that comes from her own relationship with Alba.
Rogelio was seriously jokes. It took me a minute to warm up to him, and yes he’s so self absorbed, but he usually means well.

Would I recommend this show? Oh hell yes. It’s not gender or generational specific. Anyone that watches will enjoy it. It’s old school CW. I still have moments where I like to have it playing in the background, it’s so comforting.
I don’t think there’s been another show alike to Jane the Virgin since it came out. It introduced us uncultured folk to the world of telenovelas and hell if I wouldn’t want more of that.
If you haven’t seen it please give it a chance! It’s something that I dare you not to fall for.
