This is one of those controversial brands – per the masses at least. It’s either disliked or it’s considered avant guard experimental. Now I’m no one to say whether or not that’s on brand or not, I’m just here to bring light to Indian fashion.
House of Masaba, created by Masaba Gupta herself is known for it’s quirky prints, play on colours and fabrics, and of course the personality herself. It was the epitome of bringing something different to the oversaturated industry – it was something new for the Indian Industry at least.

As someone who relishes in traditional Indian wear, it came as a shocker when I was interested in the designs created by House of Masaba. They were fun and whimsical, not to say that even the designs of the traditional sarees, lenghas were experimental. This wouldn’t be a brand I consider for say events or weddings. But for a casual get together, dinners I would definitely opt for one of the strapless or full sleeve sarees.

Now I will be the first to say – to pull off House of Masaba it takes a certain type of fashionista to make something garish look delicate and feminine. Ahem, Sonam Kapoor. Not only the way she styles her pieces, the accessories and hair/mua make the look. It makes something go from punk rock chaos turn into something feminine and delicate. The green saree, had it not been draped the way she has, it would just look like fabric overwhelming her.

Again Sonam has styled the digital print beautifully with the pink blouse. I’m not to sure it would work on everyone though. She wears the clothing, the clothing never wears her. I apologize, this is turning out to be a Sonam Kapoor appreciation post – she just does fashion so well!
The one thing I’ve noticed with House of Masaba, it’s definitely the person wearing the clothes that either makes or break the outfit. Theres many hits and misses within the same piece of clothing. I’m not to sure what it says about the brand, but when it’s pulled off correctly it looks pretty bomb dot com.

The one thing that I will outwardly and unapologetically say is: “they do bridal and bridal party fashion oh so wrong”. If you’ve watched Masaba Masaba – I’m not to sure who approved those pieces. They did not work. They will not work. They’re way to overpriced for the type of work and fabric.
There’s experimental and then theres just trying too hard.

House of Masaba is not a brand I’m going out of my way to search out. It’s beautiful in its own way… at times. Most times for me its more misses than it is hits. If I had that kind of money, to pull off a piece from House of Masaba I would probably have to hire Rhea Kapoor as well to style me. Now is that worth it? I’ll leave that question up to you.
